Soil Scientist, Agronomist & Crop Nutrition Specialist
Simon graduated with a BSc(Hons) in Soil Science in 1980 beginning a very successful, wide-ranging 30-year career as a Soil Scientist, Agronomist & Crop Nutrition Specialist, specialising in arable and vegetable crop nutrition for irrigated and unirrigated crops.
Simon's career has taken him to Saudi Arabia, Africa, Switzerland, France, Italy and the UK gaining exceptional experience in advising growers across a very wide range of temperate, subtropical and dryland irrigated crops.
During his professional scientific and advisory career, his core interest and work has centred upon the relationship, interaction and availability of soil nutrients with the aim of maximising economic crop yield and quality.
Simon is a Member of the Institute of Professional Soil Scientists (MISoilSci.) and the British Society of Soil Science. Simon is also a FACTS Qualfied Agronomist (FQA) and a recognised BASIS professional.
Unusually, Simon has also gained professional status in the complementary discipline of Computer Science with a Masters Degree (MSc.) in Computer Science and is a Chartered IT Professional (CITP). Simon has been Technical Director for a number of corporate IT companies, leading and developing teams of Technical Architects and Software Engineers in commercial IT development for projects in FTSE 100 companies.
Owen Jones BSc. PhD. FRES
Entomologist, Biopesticide & Biostimulant Specialist
Owen's academic qualifications include a Bachelor of Science Degree from Bangor University and a Doctor of Philosophy Degree from the University of Cambridge (Churchill College). Owen went on to spend seven years at the Chemical Entomology Unit, Southampton University, as a Senior Research Entomologist before co-founding AgriSense as its Technical Director in 1984, developing and commercialising insect monitoring and control systems based on pheromones.
AgriSense is now a wholly owned subsidiary of Suterra LLC, Oregon, USA and until July 2012 Owen was responsible for Global Strategy with key responsibility for early-stage technical and scientific issues within the company. He liaised with external research and development partners as well as directing the company's own internal longer term development activities.
Owen has also been the President of the International Biocontrol Manufacturers' Association (IBMA) for two years until December 2012 and was on the board of IBMA for 5 years prior to that.
He is also a Fellow of the Royal Entomological Society of London since 1978, an Honorary Professor in the School of Biosciences, Cardiff University and an Honorary Fellow of Bangor University since 2007.
He has published widely in scientific journals and text books on Integrated Pest Management and is regularly invited to give talks on the subject or chair meetings on the technology. He is also very interested in the field of Technology Transfer between Academia and Industry and has served on steering committees of organisations and initiatives set up to facilitate the process.
Owen brings to ECS many years of experience in the development and introduction of biological products and their subsequent introduction to UK and international crop production markets. His links to academic institutions are helping ECS to establish long term R & D partnerships for future innovations and new products in plant growth and productivity.
Director of Business Development
Emerald Crop Science is very pleased to announce the appointment of Mr. David Marshall as Director of Business Development and a member of the board. David is a seasoned corporate and multi sector professional, bringing close to 20 years of expertise in business and project development to the Company.
David has held numerous senior management and leadership positions with various businesses over the years with a proven track record of developing sales and implementation of business infrastructure to maintain consistent and continued growth. Through his various tenures, he has been involved with vast numbers of projects and companies and has accumulated extensive experience in all aspects of sales, commerce and project management activities. He has worked in North, Central and South America. United Kingdom and Europe, Asia and Oceana. In addition he also has a strong technical background in the financial investment sector where he has developed a considerable capital market and investment network.
Since the beginning of David's involvement with the company in September 2015 initially in a sales and advisory role to the Senior Management team we have seen dramatic growth in new business development and he has been instrumental in helping us to develop a more mature business infrastructure in order to help the business achieve its aspirations of increased growth into existing and new commercial markets.
Following this period of success David was asked David to join the Board and be part of the senior management team and assist the successful development of the Emerald Crop Science brand.
Malcolm Lewis MSc., BSc., FCA, CMC
Business Strategic Leadership and Chartered Accountant
Malcolm has combined his past business life as a company "trouble-shooter", corporate financier and project finance (China) with his experiences as a culture expert and former International sportsman (Golf – England Captain, Walker Cup, Low Amateur British Open; University of Bath second Sports Scholar 1977) to deliver Board and Senior Management Team (SMT) business performance facilitation/coaching and development.
Malcolm has degrees in Business Administration (BSc - Bath University) and Financial Management (MSc - UWE), is a Chartered Accountant (FCA - ICAEW) and a Certified Management Consultant (CMC - IBC).
Malcolm's skill centres on 'Strategic Leadership and Organisational Learning' highlighting and challenging the importance of energising the connection between 'individual and corporate purpose' with the delivery of 'business results' to create wealth. Malcolm's practical experience is in linking the 'hard' business skills of corporate finance, corporate recovery and strategy with the 'soft' behavioural skills of strategic leadership, culture and personal development he believes is a key factor to developing long term sustainable organisational success.
Malcolm lives in Bristol (UK) and operates around the world in UK, Europe, Middle East and USA; he qualified as a Chartered Accountant with KMG Thomson McLintock (KPMG) and was in industry as a finance controller and finance director. He still retains his Chartered Accountancy practising certificate (ICAEW) and management consultancy qualification whilst currently tending to run public and in-house courses rather than front line financial advice.
Malcolm has advised or personally invested in over 30 company restructurings (including Management Buy-Outs (MBO), MBI's etc).
Academically he is a visiting lecturer on postgraduate (Masters and PhD) and Executive programmes at Henley Business School (Fellow) (University of Reading - Executive Development), University of Bath (Entrepreneur in Residence 2009-2010) and the University of the West of England (Leadership). Previously Malcolm was a Fellow (2000-2008) at Bristol University (Engineering Mgt and Entrepreneurship) and an External Examiner for Masters programmes at the University of Gloucestershire (1999-2002).
